About this Event
You are warmly welcome to visit Alexander 'Greek' Thomson’s only civic structure.
Our enthusiastic volunteers will be happy to answer your questions and show you round.
Volunteers will guide you round the Steps, Wall and garden, pointing out the site of the original Queen Margaret Bridge and some of Greek Thomson's idiosyncratic designs.
We will also share our fascinating old photographs and maps with you.
About this Venue
The Sixty Steps
An immense retaining wall with a fine sweeping flight of steps stands overlooking the River Kelvin Valley.
The wildlife garden at the top of the wall affords views of the weir on the river through a pillared viewing point known as the Belle Vue.
Lovers of local history, architecture and the natural world will all find plenty to interest them at our beautiful site.
The Sixty Steps is unique in the built heritage of Glasgow as it is Greek Thomson's only civic structure.
It held a pivotal role in the development of north Kelvinside following the building of the original Queen Margaret Bridge in 1870 connecting the developed Great Western Road with the still rural north bank of the Kelvin.
A small wildlife garden sits on the slope above the wall, expanding the green corridor formed by the River Kelvin valley below.
