Sitting with the Stars Exhibition
Once the city with more screens per head than any other city in the world, going to the pictures was a way of life for Glaswegians. Focusing on the cinemas of Sauchiehall Street the exhibition will cover the ephemera that made up everyday cinemagoing – from box office to projection booth. With extensive research and materials from local cinema historian, Bren MacNeil, and mechanical equipment from Projected Picture Trust (Scotland) the exhibition will feature newspaper listings, tickets, film stock, posters, projection equipment, pictures and more. All mixed with personal stories of celebrities gracing the street and thescreens.
Art of Cinema Going – Neil Johnson-Symington
Complementing the ‘Cinema City’ display at the Riverside Museum, this talk by Curator Neil Johnson-Symington will showcase the various artforms linked to Glasgow’s‘ picture palaces’ from Glasgow Life’s Museums & Archive collections, with aspecific focus on cinemas along Sauchiehall Street.
About Neil Johnson-Symington
Neil is aCurator of Transport & Technology with Glasgow Life Museums. Based at the Riverside Museum, he curates the city’s collection of cars, motorcycles, bicycles and emergency services vehicles whilst also having a strong interestin Glasgow’s cinema and music history.

Sauchiehall Street: Culture and Heritage District is a bold 10-year plan to renew Sauchiehall Street.
With funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund UK-wide Heritage Places programme, and in partnership with Glasgow City Council, this initial discovery phase is working with cultural organisations, businesses and communities to celebrate the past and plan for the future.
Sauchiehall Street is the spine of the project, bookended by the Mitchell Library and The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
The project also takes in the adjacent streets: Bath Street and Renfrew Street, as well as the Garnethill community.
In September, our Project Space will reopen and invite members of the public in to learn about the street’s heritage as well as bring people into the conversation about their memories of place and the future.
