Every Picture Tells a Story: The Forth & Clyde Canal at Maryhill, Canal Exhibition at the Halls

This joint exhibition between Maryhill Burgh Halls and Scottish Canals traces the story of the Forth & Clyde Canal through Maryhill. From the excavation of the Maryhill Locks and Kelvin Aqueduct in the18th century to the engineering works shaping the canal today.

At its heart is painting Maryhill Locks (1879) by Linlithgow-born artist Andrew Maclaren Law, examined in close detail as a starting point for exploring the lives of lockkeepers, boatmen, and the lives once carried along this stretch of water.

Maryhill Women's History Walk

Heiress, mill worker, Suffragette: learn how Maryhill’s women made history.

As part of our celebration for Doors Open Days, we are back with our Women's History Walk!

On our guided walk along the canal, hear stories of Maryhill’s women: the heiress who gave the town her name, the mill workers immortalised in stained glass, the Suffragette who attacked a post-box, and the “wayward girls” who escaped.

Science Experiments and Maryhill Listening Project

From 1.30pm to 4pm, Scottish Canal Chris O’Connell and colleagues are holding a listening afternoon in the Garden Room at Maryhill Burgh Halls. We’re gathering stories from the community and everyone who has a connection to the canals. You can also just call by to chat to the team and learn more about history in the area.

Scottish Canals engineers will also be on hand to discuss the current engineering programme on the canal in Maryhill, at the Kelvin Aqueduct and Lock21 (an upcoming bypass installation). There will be some fun experiments and quizzes for children too!
