EVENT - Will Knight Artist Studio
151 Broomhill Drive, G11 7ND
I produce detailed and atmospheric scale architectural drawings with pen and watercolour;
seeking to faithfully record exteriors and interiors of buildings in Glasgow. My studio in my tenement flat will be open, exhibiting drawings and prints of local buildings and interiors. Having studied architecture at the Glasgow School of Art, I became interested in the way in which architects draw buildings. The architect Sarah Wigglesworth comments that, ‘To capture something as large as a building on the size of a piece of paper, architects work to a reduced scale, using symbols and codes to represent the world’. She has considered, as I have, ‘How to use the conventions of architectural drawings to describe space as a lived experience rather than as a static or predictable moment of perfection’. I demonstrate an honest, observant and perceptive approach to Architecture, exhibited and recorded through carefully constructed scale drawings with pen, atmospherically inhabited with watercolour. Applying Architectural Conventions of Plan, Section, Elevation and Scale enable me to investigate spacial qualities of architecture. This investigation is further enhanced as the object of my investigation is recorded as a lived in experience as opposed to a singular moment of perfection. Furniture, finishes and further ephemera are all depicted. The drawings I produce accurately show the nature of a space, and the forensic detail show the character of a space; allowing the viewer to engage in the subject matter in a new way, and to consider further the spaces and places we interact with. I work from a studio within Inverclyde Gardens, inhibiting and overlooking the fine historic buildings in the city that I seek to record through my work. Inverclyde Gardens is a category B-listed, Scots Baronial row of Tenements by the architect/ builder William McNicol Whyte, built in 1905. The event will allow me to share and discuss my working process and space with visitors, as well as exhibit original artwork and prints throughout the flat. Subjects of my work vary from the city’s bakeries, newsagents, cafes and restaurants; as well as studies of individual tenements and houses. |
