Glasgow Central Mosque
1 Mosque Avenue, G5 9TA
1984 Glasgow Central Mosque, an iconic building within the city, is the first purpose-built mosque in Glasgow. It was formally opened in 1984, built on a 4-acre site at a cost of three million pounds. Once the land was acquired, the preferred architectural design meant that the architect had to travel to Turkey and Jeddah. The mosque combines Islamic architecture with the characteristic Old Red Sandstone material used to build many of Glasgow’s buildings. Muslims pray, learn, marry and attend funerals at the mosque with non-Muslims visiting throughout the year.
